From
archivist/musician David Jones:
"Larry Lash wrote a piece on the closing in Flipside
no. 6. The fire marshall inspected it and closed it on Tuesday,
January 17, 1978. The final [public] show happened that night.
The lineup was: Skulls, Dickies, Nerves, LA Shakers, Randoms
and Ripper."
I shot everyone but the Dickies
on stage. The Masque was open for special events and then moved
to other locations. The word hit the street, the Avengers, Steve
Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols hung out and the Randoms
made their public debut. Brendan showed my photo of the Randoms
on MTV years ago, without mentioning my name nor payment to
me. Ah, Brendan does that a lot with my photos. Hey, I appreciate
what he's done, but he should give credit where it's due and
people should get paid for their work. He makes money off of
his stories and MY photos [the first "Live at the Masque"
CD]. What do you think? |

Chazz is an unheralded hero of the Masque.
He put up the acoustic tiles and so much more. I had such
a crush on him -- he was so tall, dark and handsome. But I
wasn't his type and doubt if I ever even stoke to him.
Bruce Barf [Moreland], the Masque's MC.

Years ago Brendan and Al Flipside released
the first CD of live music from the Masque Benefit. This photo
was attributed to another photographer and wrongly identified
(that's the Avengers' Penelope Huston with drummer Danny Furious,
her domestic partner at the time. Thanks to Peter Urban for
ID'ing Danny). Every time I saw it, I thought, wow, I wish
I took photos like that. It's just stunning
Imagine my surprise when I found the
negative in a roll of MY film! I lent a stack of negs to Trudie
to print, having NEVER seen any proof sheets. Brendan has
proof sheets and knows this is my photo. But hey, he didn't
return the photos I lent him for the project, nor pay me for
all the ones he used and credited me. I had to BUY a used
CD from Penny Lane with MY photos. Al Flipside wouldn't answer
my faxes for help. Draw your own conclusions about them.

Steve Jones, aka Jonesy's Jukebox DJ. I
wonder why he didn't go inside? There's a rumor floating about,
what do you say Jonesy, wanna tell us? |

Weirdos Cliff Roman, the Dils manager Peter Urban (later managed
Zeros, Negative Trend and the Toiling Midgets) and Bomp's Greg
Shaw. Notice everyone has their own style, whether it's Cliff
not in his usual painted Weirdo clothes, Peter's skinny black
tie or Greg's scarf. |

Keith Hages, Berlin Brats guitarist. Billy Bones, Skulls, was a close buddy and identified him for me. The Brats still have quite a following, indicated by emails asking about photos. I have good collection of live and posed shots, but none scanned/posted.
Rick Wilder wrote me from New York. Always great to hear from people. Just wish I had the resources for posting more photos. |
